My Daughter's First Speech
9:58 AMMy daughter participated in the MLK Oratorical Contest yesterday and did a great job!
The topic ofmy speech is would Dr. Martin Luther King think that we live in chaos or community today.
As a African American girl Ihave to say that Black people have come a long way in our country’s history. African Americans have overcome and accomplished a lot through struggles of open hatred and racism only based on the color of their skin. African Americans have lived through and survived a horrible past in America through slavery, oppression, and Jim Crow. I was born in the USA, but Ispent five years of my life growing up in Brazil. Living in Brazil does help me appreciate how far my people have come because we did not see any Black lawmakers while living there. Also there were not many Black people living in nice houses or driving nice cars and the only time we saw Black people on TV that were not maids or servants was when American TV shows came on down there. In a lot of ways the Black people in Brazil are still facing similar struggles our people went through here when Martin Luther King was alive.
So living in another countrydid help me see how much African Americans have accomplished. Everyone was so happy to see an African American man, Barack Obama become the President of the USA. Although its a much more tolerant country today we still have racism problems. It all didn't just go away. Many problems have remained but are covered up and done in secret instead of out in the open like in the Jim Crow days. Today we should have a moreadvanced America where people are not judged off of their skin color. Black people should not be discriminated against because they are not white. No one should be labeled based on the color of their skin. African American men and women are are not treated fairly by the police and sometimes are killed by the people who are supposed to protect us and also by other white Americans. I think if Dr. King was heretoday he would be proud with our progress but he would feel upset that we still have to face these same issues that he was dealing with. We can do so much more and this country would be so much better if it could see that holding African Americans back is actually hurting the whole nation. I know that we have come sofar. I can see it, not just with the President but also with all of the great things that other African Americans have done too. I also think that we have much farther to go because it is scary living in a world where the police kill us for no reason and where we have to fight and remind people that our lives do matter. In the end I think there isstill a lot of chaos going on, but here in America we can change things. We have a great opportunity to teach and lead people to a better future where everyone can feel safe and know that they are not judged by the color of their skin.
